5 Summer habits you should practise all year around

There’s something about summer that makes us want to be better versions of ourselves. Maybe it’s the sunshine or the pressure to be bikini perfect. Whatever it is, summer motivates us to act differently to how we are for the rest of the year. Yes, summer makes us want to spend all evening in a beer garden and stumble home in the early hours. But, it also drives us to be fitter, healthier and more energetic.

Here are some habits we develop during the summer that we should be sticking to all year round.

Eating Light Meals in the Evenings

When it is still 20 degrees in the evening, the last thing you want is a hot curry or burger and fries. Instead you want something light. Salad, spaghetti, bruschetta, sushi and lots of vegetables are usually on the menu during the summer months. It is much better for your body to make lunch your main meal of the day and to eat something light and simple in the evenings. This is because you do not have time before going to bed to use all the calories you just put on your body. So, they just sit on you while you’re in bed.

Spending More Time Outside

When the sun is out, there is nothing worse than being contained within four walls. In the summer we hit the parks with footballs and Frisbees at the ready. We spend hours running around while we soak up some much needed Vitamin D. Of course, when the rain and snow is plummeting down outside this might not be too realistic, but we can always make an effort to spend more time outside. Even just a stroll around the block on your lunch break can make you feel great.

Drinking Lots of Water

In the summer, when things start to heat up, we compensate for all the water we are sweating out by drinking lots. But, we shouldn’t just be drinking lots of water during the summer months, staying hydrated is a year-round business. Water is the elixir of life that keeps all our bodily systems functioning properly. It also keeps our skin and hair healthy and glowing. Keep a bottle of water on you at all times and drink regularly – you’ll soon see the positive effects on your body.

Being Social

In the winter, it is far too easy to avoid making evening plans in favour of a night in with Netflix. Spending down time on your own every now and again is not a bad thing, but when that becomes the norm then you might want to consider shaking things up a bit. When it stays light until 9pm and the weather is good, we are more inclined to go out with friends but we should really be doing this all year round. If it is too dark and cold to go, consider having people over for a dinner party.

Working Out

There is a lot of pressure when the sun comes out to get the perfect beach body. From March onwards, people flock to the gym to try and tone up before bikini season comes around. But, why should protein smoothies and HIIT classes be limited to the summer? Your winter body needs just as much loving as its summer counterpart and spending months neglecting it isn’t going to do it much good. Make fitness and exercise a year round habit and you will thank yourself when you don’t have to go all out in the summer to shed all of your Winter calories.
